There is indeed work being done on a revision of the current standard.
There is an official web page under construction at
http://www.dknet.dk/JTC1/SC22/WG14/.
Unfortunately, most of the links on that page are dangling at the
moment, but one that isn't is ``papers'' which points to a mirror of the
official ftp site at ftp://ftp.dmk.com/DMK/sc22wg14. At the FTP site,
under c9x/Revision-guidelines, you'll find a number of useful documents.
According to the Charter:
The milestones for the revision process are:
** CD Registration -- December 1996
** CD Ballot -- December 1997
** DIS Ballot -- December 1998
